IMPORTANCE OF STOKLEY CARMICHAEL
Stockley Carmichael also known as Kwame Ture came up with the saying "Black Power." He was best known for that saying. What made him say "Black Power" was when he was arrested for the 27th time. He said that "they were saying Freedom too much." They needed a new phrase and that it would be "Black Power." What made Stokley Carmichael join Civil Rights? It was the blacks and whites that protested by doing sit in's at lunch counters in the south. He was arrested so many times. He lost count after 32 for protesting by being nonviolent. He was also apart of the project called 'Freedom Summer.' He wrote a book called Black Power: the Politics of Liberation in America (1967) with a guy called by the name of Charles V. Hamilton. He also wrote another book called Stokley Speaks: Black Power Back to Pan-Africanism (1971). He also came up with the slogan "Black is Beautiful." This meaning, they take pride in being black and don't care for the whites style and appearance. It also meant styling your hair, Afro style, and wearing the African American forms of dress styles. He started to look down on Martin Luther King and his way of protesting. He evedently becomes "honorary prime minister" of the Black Panther Party.
