Kwame Ture, commonly known as Stokley Carmichael, was a leader of SNCC in his later life. He was a freedom rider during the Civil Rights Movement and was arrested many times during his nonviolent acts. Stokely began the phrase "Black Power" when he was arrested in the mid 60's. Mr. Carmichael changed his name to Kwame Ture to honor african leaders he befriended in Guinea, where he spent his last 30 years. He was also a Black Panthers prime minister, has two sons, and married then divorced Miriam Makeba an African singer and then Marlyatou Barry a Guinean doctor. On 5th June, 1966, James Meredith started a march from Memphis to Jackson to protest. He was assassinated, when they heard the news, civil rights leaders including Carmichael and Martin Luther King in marched in Meredith's name. In 1967 him and Charles Hamilton wrote the book "Black Power" , this is an important quote form the book "It is a call for black people in this country to unite, to recognize their heritage, to build a sense of community. It is a call for black people to define their own goals, to lead their own organizations." (Black Power 1967). He was also a Black Panthers prime minister, was arrested many times because of his beliefs in segregation, moved to Guinea, Africa in 1969 , has two sons, and married then divorced Miriam Makeba an African singer and then Marlyatou Barry a Guinean doctor.
